All 5 of us were very excited for our next destination of Calgary, Alberta. We booked a spot at an Okotoks, AB campground for two weeks so that we could visit with my sisters Amy and Katie who live in Calgary.

We arrived on June 30, so we were able to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday while we were here. My sisters were both working, so we ended up just staying in Okotoks and going to the community centre where they had a small celebration and free swimming for the kids. The fireworks didn’t start until 10 pm and it was pretty rainy and cloudy looking, so we weren’t sure that the fireworks would be happening. It started raining and there was a lighting storm right at 10pm, but the fireworks went on anyway and we got to watch nature’s fireworks right along side the firework show. It was pretty cool!

The campground we were at was right at the edge of a river, and one of the things people from Calgary love to do is go floating down thier rivers! So we joined in the fun, bought some tubes from the dollar store, and the kids had tons of fun floating on that river pretty much every day.

We had Amy, Katie, and Nino (Katie’s boyfriend), over for a BBQ and s’mores around the fire. We also all squeezed into our trailer for a few of our favourite games on the PS4 (drawful and quiplash).

On Sunday of our first weekend in Calgary, we drove with Amy and Katie to Drumheller to visit the Royal Tyrell Dinosaur Museum and to check out some of the other sights in the area. The museum was really neat, with lots of very complete dinosaur skeletons that were found in Alberta. We also noticed that a lot of them were the actual bones. We have been to lots of museums where the bones are casts of the original so we all thought it was pretty neat to be seeing the actual bones on display.

After we were done at the museum we drove around the Drumheller area to look at the cool landscape. It looked a lot like the painted desert in Arizona. We stopped at a suspension bridge that had a sign posted saying that a maximum of 20 people should be on the bridge at a time…that definitely wasn’t followed but luckily we all made across!

Eric, Haydn and Katie went for a hike up the hills nearby, while the rest of us tried to find some shade to cool off in. We drove a bit further down the road and found some Hoo Doo’s and a tiny little town named Dorothy that had some cute little church buildings and a very picturesque grain elevator.
